Dornenreich - "Bitter Ist's Dem Tod Zu Dienen"
This record is about as out there as any I own. They're a German band playing symphonic, keyboard driven black metal somewhat like Cradle Of Filth but much more rooted in the second wave Norwegian style of black metal. It sounds somewhat straightforward on paper until you throw in some folk/pagan influences, mix in myriad tempo changes and push every song past the ten minute mark ala Opeth. Oh yeah, and then sing everything in German. Like Opeth, their songs alternate between heavy and light, clean/raspy vocals constantly, metamorphosing many times over within the same song so the genre bending is a bit off-putting the first few listens. But most of the songs have a solid traditional black metal backbone, rooted in speedy double bass drumming and tremolo picking but juxtaposed with cellos, violins and pianos and a healthy dose of folk/pagan inspired acoustic passages interspersed throughout each song. These guys are definitely not for BM purists but they're a nice change pace of from traditional black metal, much like Opeth is from pure death metal."Nächtlich Liebend"
